MAKING THE HOPE OF TODAY THE REALITY OF TOMORROW Research * Patient Care * Education * Community Outreach Hope is an essential part of life. It helps us reach beyond our grasp and see the invisible, feel the intangible, and accomplish the impossible. For there is nothing more important, or more powerful, than the hope of something better tomorrow.
At the Hollings Cancer Center, we understand that. And we prove our commitment every day with advanced, innovative, basic and clinical research whose purpose is to TRANSFORM CANCER PATIENTS INTO CANCER SURVIVORS. We’re succeeding, too, helping people from every corner of the state and all walks of life to confront and come back from the disease. If your life has ever been touched by cancer, you understand how important hope is. You can give hope to others by supporting the Hollings Cancer Center in many ways: Research * In the labs and clinics at Hollings Cancer Center, specialists and scientists are unlocking the secrets of this disease that kills 8,940 South Carolinians each year. This team of investigators and discoverers – supported by our collaborative environment and modern infrastructure – is bringing greater hope to more people every day. Gifts in support of research allow us to create endowed chairs, state-of-the-art laboratories, and provide seed funding for promising research projects. Patient Care * As a university-based center, we combine the full range of cancer specialties – including medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, chemotherapy, and reconstructive surgery –under one roof to deliver a higher level of care to the patients we serve. Gifts to support patient care can not only be designated by disease (breast, lung, melanoma, etc.), but they also provide much needed funds to assist patients through every step of their cancer journey. Whether they need assistance with transportation to a chemotherapy appointment or need funds to buy a wig, patient care funds allow us to make a difference. Education * Hollings Cancer Center is committed to providing resources and training that shape the next generation of doctors and researchers – who, in turn, will be pioneers in developing the next generation of treatments and therapies. Gifts to support education help us provide specialized cancer training to medical students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty to develop a passion and base of knowledge necessary to be meaningful contributors to the battle against cancer. Community Outreach * In the ongoing effort to confront the challenges of cancer, knowledge is power. And Hollings Cancer Center provides communities a broad range of services that are critical to understanding – and overcoming – the disease. At the core of our commitment is a focus on reducing the disproportionate burden of cancer on minority populations – especially African-Americans, who are more than twice as likely to be struck by cancer as Caucasians, and more likely to die from it. Contributions to our community outreach programs help support our mobile health unit, patient navigation program, community education forums, patient resource library, and our volunteer program to name a few. |
